Application requirements

The admission procedure will be open to applicants who are graduates of a bachelor's degree in psychology (graduates who have completed the first or second cycle of higher education). 

A prerequisite for study is the ability to read with comprehension and process domestic and foreign literature in the field and related fields, to express knowledge and ideas in writing and orally, to use printed and electronic resources and information technology (the Internet, databases, information programmes, software for carrying out statistical calculations). The candidate must also have the personal qualities to study, empathy, an interest in working with people and in developing himself/herself. The study requires the ability to work individually and independently with professional and scientific resources, to prepare for seminars and exercises, to work on assigned topics from the studied subjects. Applicants are required to take an active approach to their studies.

Graduate's profile

The graduate of the Master's degree programme in Social and Occupational Psychology is oriented in the current possibilities of psychological specialization and practical application on the labour market. He/she has specific knowledge mainly in the field of applied psychological disciplines (in particular learning theory, cognitive structure theory, personality theory, work and sport performance theory, human leadership theory, work analysis theory, learning needs analysis theory, counselling and psychotherapy theory, psychometric test theory, community functioning theory, change theory), which is primarily directed towards the understanding of the behaviour and survival of individuals within groups and larger systems. Knows the principles of designing and conducting a challenging quantitative or qualitative research project, including the possibilities of data analysis.  

Possesses skills in the application of specific knowledge from a variety of psychological disciplines, particularly constructing methodologies, designing performance assessment procedures, designing training, designing a therapeutic plan or psychotherapy. Furthermore, he/she has skills in diagnosis within research (laboratory conditions, field research) and within applied disciplines according to the psychological specialization. The graduate is able to design and implement a more complex research project (experiment), including multivariate data analysis or qualitative data analysis. The graduate also has the ability to write professional articles/outputs/findings/reports, to conceptualise, to carry out analyses, and the ability to present objectives and results as well as the ability to reflect on his/her own and others' professional activities. 

The graduate demonstrates independence in solving problems and projects in the field of study in a changing environment. The graduate demonstrates the ability to work effectively as an individual, member or leader of a team. Possesses innovative thinking and is prepared to present the results of his/her own analysis and study in a professional manner to a professional audience, including in a foreign language. 

The goal is to develop not only social skills, but also the self-care skills that graduates will inevitably need to prevent compassion fatigue or burnout in the helping profession of psychology. Graduates will acquire the skills of working with their own and other people's emotions, giving feedback and the relevant competencies necessary for the psychology profession. The graduate will be skilled in self-reflection, identification of his/her strengths and their development. Acquire counselling skills. The graduate will have the ability to broaden his/her understanding of the experiences of clients, patients, caregivers as well as health care professionals in selected clinical groups and situations and thus increase his/her competence in dealing with patients on a daily basis. He/she has developed narrative competence.   

The graduate has basic research competencies demonstrated in the thesis. The graduate acquires professional competences related to the psychological content of the professional process and activities in the context of clinical practice, counselling and psychotherapeutic practice, educational practice, work and organisational contexts, namely the ability to specify goals (analyse needs and determine objectives), assess or diagnose (individual, group, organisation, situation), develop (service or product), implement and evaluate an intervention and communicate the results. 

The profile of the graduate/trainee and the composition of the curriculum is in line with the recommendations of EuroPsy - the European Certificate in Psychology (EFPA, 2019), which supports the implementation of new subjects in the curriculum in order to achieve equivalence and recognition of education in the European area according to the plan of the Long-term Development Plan of the CU (https://uniba.sk/fileadmin/ruk/legislativa/2021/dlhodoby_zamer_rozvoja_UK_2021-2027.pdf). The graduate profile further corresponds to the CU's Long Term Development Plan, specifically in the area focused on the study of psychological processes, behaviour and the human mind; the impact of digital technologies on the educational, rehabilitation, therapeutic process; issues of minority groups and communities with different linguistic-cultural traditions as CU research objectives in the Long Term Development Plan.
