About the project: SERIGO research project brings together 17 partners from 11 countries that address the needs of European rural areas that are facing social, demographic, economic and environmental pressures due to subsequent transformations and crises. The project aims to enhance resilience, social inclusion, and well-being of vulnerable groups in European rural areas through socially innovative solutions initiated by or involving actors from the social economy.

The project is:

  • Conducting community-based participatory research through case studies from across Europe and pilots testing in five EU Member States.
  • Fostering debates and collaboration on the topic among diverse stakeholders in Europe.
  • Providing policymakers with recommendations for policy development around social inclusion in rural areas.

As part of the research project, the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University, focuses on mapping existing social innovations that facilitate the social inclusion of marginalized Roma communities, elderly people, ethnic groups and women in the municipalities of Raslavice and Turňa nad Bodvou. In addition, in cooperation with the municipality of Ostrovany, we will design a pilot solution, the goal of which will be the creation of a municipal social enterprise in a form of a community energy initiative. The social enterprise will be focused on exploring the opportunities provided by renewable energy sources as well as the circular economy. The aim will be to address various dimensions of vulnerability at the community and individual household level, including access to energy, employment and quality housing. Last but not least, the aim will be to examine the local impacts of the pilot project and suggest how social innovations could be replicated in other rural areas where marginalized communities live.

Overall, with a focused approach to addressing the challenges faced by rural communities, SERIGO is committed to harnessing the capabilities of social economy actors to drive inclusive development initiatives and support vulnerable groups in rural areas.
